Endowment Honors South Dakota Educator

Bruce and Norma Brugman

Bruce and Norma Brugman

A new endowment through Northern State University Foundation honors a Northern alumna who worked for almost 40 years in education in South Dakota.

The $105,000 Norma Brugman Endowment was started by Bruce Brugman of Rapid City to honor the legacy of his wife, Norma. Both are 1969 Northern graduates.

Norma taught seventh grade for 38 years in Doland, Clark, Blunt and Dakota Middle School in Rapid City. As an educator, Norma was known for her innovation as well as her caring nature with students. She was also known as a supportive mentor to her colleagues.

Norma passed away in 2018 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Now, the Norma Brugman Endowment will fund an annual scholarship for a female NSU student who is a native-born South Dakotan and current South Dakota resident, and who is also majoring in secondary education, with an emphasis on English and social studies.
